Camitha, my grandmother and godmother, was born in Cuba and raised in Haiti. She ultimately immigrated to New York City and went on to earn a college degree, a rarity for a Black woman of Hispanic descent born in the early 1920's. Her passion for education made a lasting impression on her seven children, including my mother who would earn a graduate degree in Software Engineering and become a college professor.
